FragPunk is ridiculous. And that’s why it works.
It’s fast, it’s loud, and it throws balance out the window for sheer chaos. But somewhere beneath the absurdity of Egg Kings and teleportation grenades, there’s a smart shooter doing something different in a genre that badly needs it.
That said, FragPunk is also a mess, especially when it comes to its economy, monetization, and game modes. The good news? It’s still absolutely worth jumping into, even if it’s only for short bursts.
FragPunk’s Shard Cards Change Everything

The star of FragPunk is its Shard Card system. Every round, both teams vote on three random cards. These cards are wild, boosting jump height, giving enemies massive heads, or turning the battlefield into a melee-only chaos pit.
What makes it work is how these cards actually impact gameplay. They’re not just gimmicks. They shape how each round plays, reward smart team voting, and introduce unexpected strategy.
You earn Shard Points through kills or pickups. Spend them wisely, and your team can completely flip a match. It’s an unpredictable, sometimes unfair, but often hilarious mechanic that makes each game feel fresh.
Lancers Are Fun, But Not All Are Created Equal – FragPunk Review

There are currently over a dozen playable characters, called Lancers. They’re not hard-classed like in other shooters. You can switch mid-match, and each Lancer has three abilities that often feel completely overpowered, and that’s kind of the point.
Some are solid (like Hollowpoint’s recon skills), others feel busted (Serket’s stealth and teleport combo is broken), and a few like Jaguar feel like filler. But overall, they push you to experiment and change your playstyle constantly.
You can combo cards and Lancer abilities in wild ways, turning invisible, boosting speed, throwing down a turret, then teleporting behind enemies for a wipe.
It’s nonsense. It’s brilliant.

Gunplay Is Solid, But Not The Star
Weapons in FragPunk are serviceable but generic. You’ve got your SMGs, ARs, snipers, nothing new. Gunplay is quick, precise, and less punishing than Valorant or CS.
Movement doesn’t hurt your aim, so you can run and gun like it’s COD. Headshots are king, recoil is easy to manage, and fights are over fast. Weapon choice is actually shaped more by the Shard Cards you draw than the gun itself.
Unfortunately, there’s not much weapon variety, and some categories (like marksman rifles) are useless right now.
Game Modes: Great Core, Forgettable Extras

The main mode, Shard Clash, is where FragPunk shines. It’s a bomb-plant defusal format, but 90% of rounds end in full team wipes. Matches are quick, first to four wins (six in ranked). The pacing is perfect for chaos.
The endgame Duel round is an awesome 1v1 relay finale where each player gets one life. It’s tense, dramatic, and the most fun part of ranked.
The other modes? Not so much. Outbreak (Halo’s Infection mode) is broken. Free-for-All and Deathmatch feel like filler. None of them hit the same way Shard Clash does.
The Monetization Is a Disaster – FragPunk review
Here’s the biggest downside: FragPunk’s economy is awful.
There are way too many currencies, Gold, FragPunk Coins, Glunite, Battle Pass Tokens, Ranking Coins, Club Supplies, and more. Each is used in different shops, with different unlock rules.
Worse, the best characters (Lancers) cost way too much Gold, forcing players to either grind for weeks or pay real money.
Cosmetics are split across random loot packs, gacha pulls, event shops, and confusing menus. Even the battle pass has three tiers, with the “Ultimate” one offering barely anything for double the cost.
It’s frustrating, predatory, and deeply at odds with the game’s otherwise player-friendly systems.

Is FragPunk Worth Playing?
If you want a casual, chaotic FPS that doesn’t take itself seriously, FragPunk is a blast. Our FragPunk review shows that the card mechanics, quick rounds, and absurd powers make it feel like the Mario Kart of hero shooters.
But if you’re here for serious competition or long-term progression? You might bounce off hard.
The unbalanced Lancers, random card influence, and economy missteps hold it back from greatness.
That said, for short sessions with friends, it’s one of the most entertaining shooters of 2025.
