Rey Dau

First time anyone faces Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds, it seems pretty obvious that it can’t be captured. On the contrary, you have to slay the creature as the main quest The Eye of the Storm tells you. So, you can’t hunt it, right?

Luckily, outside of the quest, you can capture it. It’s possible to capture Rey Dau and it also unlocks some amazing tactical benefits in Monster Hunter Wilds.

When Capture Is Not an Option

In main story quests, particularly in early chapters, Rey Dau goes to battle in a frenzied, uncontrollable manner.

The game compels you to kill it during such situations for storytelling reasons. This is even explained clearly by the quest text that uses”Slay” over “Hunt.” No matter what trap or tranquilizer you use during this particular fight, the capture prompt will never be triggered.

You can drop a pitfall trap and see it thrash about or you can slam it with tranq bombs and nothing will occur. It’s scripted and added to the game’s code. People frequently get confused thinking this is a bug. It isn’t!

When Capture Is Possible

Once Rey Dau is back in the Windward Plains in optional quests or free roam, you can capture it.. With capturing as an option, the game no longer forces a narrative constraint.

You’re free to approach the hunt tactically. Now, watch for the skull icon near the minimap monster symbol. That’s your signal!

It means Rey Dau is near death. At that point, it’s time to lay down a pitfall trap. Shock traps won’t work here, because Rey Dau is a lightning-type monster and immune to electric snares.

Once it is trapped, you must move quickly. Two tranq bombs will knock it out, and you can successfully capture Rey Dau. To make it all happen, you need to move fast. If you let your opportunity slip, it will heal and perhaps escape or reset.

Trap Timing and Weak Points

Rey Dau’s primary weak spots are:

  • Head
  • Wings
  • Tail

The head is particularly weak after it releases a huge lightning bolt. Focus Mode can allow you to get critical hits during this window.

If you shatter the wings and tail, it will slow it down and its damage output. These moves also open up your chances of incapacitating the monster fast enough for a capture possibility.

Also, watch out for environmental possibilities. For example, in Windward Plains, there are Vine Traps in trees or breakable rocks. Activating these at the proper moment can stagger Rey Dau and that makes it more vulnerable to trapping.

Elemental Tips for the Fight

Rey Dau is theoretically resistant to lightning so you don’t want to bring thunder-element weapons or shock-based gadgets. Instead, bring water and cold instead. They are elements that deal additional damage as well as accelera your capture process.

The Hope Armor Set is perfect for this battle, thanks to its Divine Blessing skill which diminishes damage incoming. Its resistances harmonize well against Rey Dau’s element type.

You also need to bring Flash Pods. These will ground Rey Dau temporarily when it flies off. The moment it returns, rush in to apply focused damage or lay your trap.

Capture vs Kill: What’s Better?

If you are farming for certain Rey Dau items, such as the Thunderhorn or Shell, you might rather slay it.

Some materials drop more frequently from killing. However, capturing can shorten the fight significantly. It’s especially effective in high-difficulty hunts or Arch-Tempered variants where health pools balloon.

When you capture, it also yields its own exclusive materials.

If you need to accelerate this process or simply stack monster kills for loot, try MitchCactus Monster Hunter Wilds Monster Kill Lobbies. These lobbies allow you to kill 5–6 monsters per map, quickly gain crowns, rank, and crucial items. Our lobbies are 100% safe, quick, and supported by 15,000+ positive reviews.

And you can stack lobbies back-to-back for serious farming!

Final Thoughts

Rey Dau is a terrifying boss as well as it is also a strategic puzzle that most players are unable to solve. Although story hunts force you to kill it, open hunts allow you the opportunity to outsmart it and capture.

Capture strategies reward players with special loot and greater mastery of the battlefield.

So the next time you glimpse that apex wyvern flying overhead, remember this: Rey Dau can be caught!
