Get the Checkmate Achievement in 18v18 Mode

In Marvel Rivals, the Checkmate achievement has nothing to do with fighting ability. It all comes down to intelligence, time, and knowing where to search.

The Chronoverse Saga Objective tree includes the Checkmate achievement as one of its hidden progression challenges. When you complete it successfully, the game rewards you with five achievement points, which directly push you closer to earning free Units and unlocking additional progression milestones.

The catch, however, lies in its strict conditions. You cannot complete this achievement anywhere or anytime you want. The game locks it behind a specific mode and map combination, which means preparation matters.

The Checkmate achievement only activates on the Grand Garden map, and this location appears exclusively within Annihilation’s Marvel Rivals 18v18 Mode. If you queue into any other mode, the puzzle simply will not exist.

To even begin working on the achievement, you must enter Annihilation and wait for Grand Garden to load, making Marvel Rivals 18v18 Mode the only gateway to completing this challenge.

Where to Find the Checkmate Puzzle

Go directly to the center of the Grand Garden map after loading Marvel Rivals 18v18 Mode. Massive chess pieces tower above the arena, resting on tall platforms that immediately draw your attention and hint at a hidden mechanic waiting to be triggered.

These items are not decorative. They hold the secret to accomplishing the goal. Choose a ranged hero with a quick fire rate before engaging. Here, accuracy is more important than damage.

Human Torch and Gambit are excellent choices. Check out our guide on how to play Gambit in Marvel Rivals, which breaks down combos and clever map control, if you want to really maximize Gambit’s ranged pressure and positioning for objectives like these.

The Correct Chess Piece Order

This is an important step. Attack the chess pieces in the exact sequence listed below:

  • Pawn
  • King
  • Queen
  • Knight
  • Bishop

If you hit the wrong piece, nothing happens. Try again after resetting. When you execute every step correctly, the platforms immediately start moving, shifting their massive structures and uncovering a hidden route that opens along the lower level of the map.

Enter the Hidden Room

Carefully jump down. Go along the recently opened path. There’s a secret room that includes a chess piece at the end. Enter it to get the Checkmate achievement immediately. After that, you can use the Career option to claim your five achievement points.
