Updated June 2026: Astra Malorum remains available in Black Ops 7 Zombies. You do not need to finish Ashes of the Damned, complete a secret side quest, or collect a special relic before selecting the map.
Astra Malorum arrived with Black Ops 7 Season 01 as a free post-launch Zombies map. Once your game and Zombies content are updated, you can launch it directly from the Zombies map-select screen.
What Is Astra Malorum?
Astra Malorum is the second Round-Based Zombies story map in Black Ops 7. It follows Ashes of the Damned and continues the crew’s search for another Shadowsmith inside the Dark Aether.
The map takes place in a mysterious early-20th-century observatory drifting through the rings of Saturn. Its rusted domes, damaged telescopes, ritual chambers, and cosmic machinery create a tighter experience than the much larger Ashes of the Damned.
The official Black Ops 7 Season 01 overview confirms Astra Malorum’s main features:
- The O.S.C.A.R. Elite robot
- The LGM-1 Wonder Weapon
- Stellar Dissector laser traps
- Apogee Annihilator rockets
- A complete Main Quest
- Standard, Directed, and Cursed experiences
- A final quest section connected to Mars
Astra Malorum is no longer the newest BO7 Zombies map, but it remains fully playable and still offers its Main Quest, challenges, Intel, Relics, and unique rewards.
How to Access Astra Malorum in BO7
You do not unlock Astra Malorum through an in-match quest. Follow these menu steps:
- Update Call of Duty and Black Ops 7.
- Launch Call of Duty.
- Select Black Ops 7.
- Open Zombies.
- Choose solo play, a private squad, or public matchmaking.
- Select your preferred Zombies mode.
- Choose Astra Malorum from the available maps.
- Confirm your loadout and start the match.
Standard and Directed Mode let you enter the full map. Other playlists, such as Cursed, Starting Room, or limited-time variants, change the rules but do not permanently replace the normal Astra Malorum experience.
The current Black Ops 7 game and progression section brings the available BO7 content and related services together.
Do You Need to Complete Ashes of the Damned First?
No. Completing the Ashes of the Damned Main Quest is not required to select Astra Malorum.
The Zombies story continues from the earlier map, so playing Ashes first may help with the narrative. However, it does not control access through the map-select menu.
What If Astra Malorum Is Not Showing?
If the map is missing or locked, check the installation rather than searching for an in-game relic.
- Install the latest game update.
- Open Manage Files and confirm the required Black Ops 7 and Zombies content is installed.
- Restart Call of Duty after the update finishes.
- Restart the console or PC if the playlist does not refresh.
- Check Activision’s service status if Zombies menus fail to load.
- Make sure you have normal Black Ops 7 Zombies access rather than a restricted trial playlist.
A purchased Battle Pass is not required to play the map.
Which Astra Malorum Mode Should You Choose?
The best version depends on whether you want the full quest, clearer guidance, or a harder classic-style run.
| Mode | Best For | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Normal Zombies runs | Full map with limited quest guidance |
| Directed | New players and Main Quest practice | Guided objectives and controlled round progression |
| Cursed | Experienced Zombies players | Reduced guidance, limited HUD, Relics, and older-style systems |
| Starting Room | Short survival challenges | Doors remain locked in the opening area |
| Mars Survival | High-round survival | Uses the Mars boss arena as a separate survival location |
Choose Standard when you want the normal map experience. Directed Mode works better when your main goal is learning the quest or reaching its later areas without solving every step independently.
Players using Zombies matches to work through weapon challenges can also compare the Infestation mastery camo unlock route.
What to Expect Inside
Astra Malorum is not a constantly changing platform map. Instead, it uses connected observatory areas, enclosed laboratories, courtyards, machinery rooms, and later quest locations.
During a normal match, expect:
- Standard, armored, and special zombies
- O.S.C.A.R. patrol encounters
- Power and Pack-a-Punch setup
- Perk machines and wall weapons
- The LGM-1 Wonder Weapon
- Environmental traps
- Side Easter eggs and Intel
- A Main Quest that eventually reaches Mars
- A multi-stage boss encounter involving Caltheris
O.S.C.A.R. can scan an area with its Detection Field. Once it enters Combat Mode, it uses shield drones, electrical attacks, projectiles, and effects that make nearby zombies more aggressive.
Destroy its shield drones before wasting heavy ammunition on the main robot. The drones can keep O.S.C.A.R. immune while they remain active.
How to Turn On Power and Reach Pack-a-Punch
Pack-a-Punch does not require the imaginary Fractured Gate or Star Relic described in the older version of this article.
At the start of the match, follow the orange objective markers through the early areas. The guided steps lead you to missing components needed to repair the Harmonic Oculus.
Once the Oculus is working, you can restore power and gain access to Pack-a-Punch. Directed Mode provides clearer objective prompts if you are learning this route for the first time.
After opening Pack-a-Punch:
- Upgrade one dependable weapon before spending heavily on the Mystery Box.
- Build armor before starting longer quest steps.
- Keep enough Essence for doors, perks, and ammunition.
- Learn a safe training route before higher rounds crowd the observatory.
Tips for Getting Through the Map
Open the Main Route Early
Do not stay in the starting area for too many rounds unless you are deliberately playing Starting Room. Early zombies are easier to control, which makes opening doors and repairing the Oculus safer.
Prepare for O.S.C.A.R.
Watch for its scanning field and destroy the supporting drones first. Fighting the robot in a cramped area becomes much harder when regular zombies surround you.
Use the Map’s Traps
The Stellar Dissector cuts through groups with laser beams, while the Apogee Annihilator fires Astronomer Rockets. Both can save ammunition when rounds become crowded.
Keep One Reliable Boss Weapon
Astra Malorum eventually pushes players into tougher Elite and quest encounters. Carry one weapon for normal hordes and another option with stronger single-target damage.
Try Directed Mode Before the Full Main Quest
Directed Mode helps you learn the map, power route, Pack-a-Punch process, and quest order. Once those steps feel familiar, Standard gives you more freedom.
Do Not Rush Every Side Easter Egg
The map contains Intel, Relics, challenges, and hidden interactions. Secure armor, upgraded weapons, and perks before chasing optional secrets during a serious run.
Players starting on a different profile can review the available ready-to-play BO7 account packages after deciding which progression route suits them.
Astra Malorum Main Quest and Rewards
The Main Quest is separate from basic map access. You can play normal rounds, use Pack-a-Punch, fight O.S.C.A.R., and explore the observatory without completing the full Easter egg.
Completing the quest moves the story forward, opens the Mars sequence, and leads into the Caltheris encounter. It also provides XP, Calling Card rewards, and progress connected to the map’s challenge and Cursed systems.
The Main Quest later becomes important to the wider BO7 Zombies story, but it does not act as a key for entering Astra Malorum itself.
Related Black Ops 7 Content
Astra Malorum focuses on Zombies, while Endgame uses its own campaign-connected PvE structure. The steps for entering BO7 Endgame without completing every story mission remain separate from this map.

No. Ashes of the Damned provides earlier story context, but its Main Quest does not block Astra Malorum in the map-select menu.
Can you play Astra Malorum solo?

What is the Astra Malorum Wonder Weapon?
The map’s unique Wonder Weapon is the LGM-1, or Little Green Menace. It launches small saucer-like projectiles that track and attack nearby enemies.
Is Mars a separate Astra Malorum map?
The full Main Quest eventually reaches a Mars boss area. BO7 also includes Mars Survival as a separate survival experience based on that arena.
Final Thoughts
Accessing Astra Malorum is much simpler than the older version of this article suggested. Update the game, open Black Ops 7 Zombies, choose a suitable mode, and select the map.
No Fractured Gate, Star Relic, or Rift Portal is required. Once inside, focus on restoring power, opening Pack-a-Punch, and preparing for O.S.C.A.R. before attempting the Main Quest.
