Axe Throwing Easter Egg

Updated June 2026: The Axe Throwing Easter Egg remains available on Ashes of the Damned. However, the challenge takes place at Blackwater Lake—not a Lumber Yard—and involves a full sequence of floating targets rather than three fixed wooden targets.

The Mr. Peeks axe challenge is one of the shortest side activities in Black Ops 7 Zombies. You do not need to complete the Main Quest, build the Necrofluid Gauntlet, or reach a high round.

You only need access to Blackwater Lake, the trophy inside the work shed, and the Combat Axe that appears outside.

How to Start the Challenge

Head to Blackwater Lake and find the small work shed in the southwest section of the area. It is the building that contains a Crafting Table.

Enter the side room beside the table and look for a small axe-throwing trophy on a shelf. Interact with it. The trophy should glow, and you will hear an activation sound.

Next, go outside the shed. A free Combat Axe will appear lodged in a stump or log beside the building. Pick it up to activate the target sequence.

StepWhat to Do
1Travel to Blackwater Lake
2Enter the work shed with the Crafting Table
3Interact with the trophy on the shelf
4Pick up the Combat Axe outside
5Move toward the roadside target area
6Hit each floating target before the sequence ends

The challenge does not require Pack-a-Punch, power at every location, or any Main Quest item.

The official Ashes of the Damned map overview shows Blackwater Lake and the wider map layout for players still learning the major locations.

Locate the Floating Targets

After picking up the Combat Axe, move from the shed toward the road and fence near the Blackwater Lake Power Pump and exfil phone area.

A glowing purple target will appear outside the normal playable boundary. Throw the axe directly at it.

Once you land the first hit:

  1. The current target disappears.
  2. Another target appears in a new position.
  3. The early targets remain stationary.
  4. Later targets begin moving.
  5. The sequence becomes progressively faster.

You do not travel to a barn, water tower, or train tracks. The complete mini-game stays around the Blackwater Lake roadside target area.

The challenge provides repeated axe throws during the sequence, so you do not need to craft or carry a large equipment supply. Still, do not waste time between targets because the later moving targets disappear quickly.

How Many Targets Do You Need to Hit?

To complete the loot portion, continue hitting targets until Mr. Peeks appears.

For the Bullseye Calling Card, aim to hit 11 targets before the challenge ends.

The trophy represents a previous champion score of 10. Therefore, hitting only 10 may tie the score, summon Mr. Peeks, and provide random loot without unlocking the Bullseye card.

The safest method is:

  • Hit all 11 targets quickly.
  • Avoid unnecessary misses.
  • Keep your crosshair near the center of the target area.
  • Throw the next axe as soon as the new target appears.
  • Continue until the Calling Card notification appears.

Missing one throw may not instantly cancel the challenge, but it consumes valuable time. For the most consistent result, treat it as an 11-hit clean run.

Claim Your Reward

After you complete the target sequence, Mr. Peeks appears, performs a short animation, and drops the rewards directly onto the ground.

Possible rewards include:

  • Essence
  • Salvage
  • Perk cans
  • Weapons
  • Equipment
  • Scorestreaks
  • Aether Tools
  • Aetherium Crystals for Pack-a-Punch upgrades

The exact reward changes between matches. Later-round completions may also produce stronger loot, although completing the challenge early makes the target sequence easier to manage.

You can also unlock the Bullseye Calling Card by beating the champion score during the mini-game.

Only one player can complete this Easter egg in a match. Once someone activates and finishes it, the rest of the squad cannot repeat the challenge until a new game.

Tips for Hitting Every Target

Leave One Zombie Alive

Clear most of the round before interacting with the trophy. Keeping one slow zombie alive gives you enough space to aim without starting another full wave.

Use a Decoy or Monkey Bomb

In co-op or a busy round, throw a distraction before starting the sequence. This keeps nearby zombies away during the faster moving targets.

Stand Near the Roadside Fence

Do not throw from directly beside the work shed. Move toward the road and fence so the target fills more of your view and requires less vertical adjustment.

Aim Slightly Above Distant Targets

The Combat Axe follows a small arc. For targets that appear farther away or higher in the air, aim a little above the center.

Learn the Early Positions

The first targets give you time to understand the throw speed. Use those stationary targets to settle your aim before the moving sequence starts.

Do Not Pause After a Hit

The next target can appear quickly. Keep your throwing input ready and scan the full target area immediately after each successful hit.

Why Mr. Peeks Appeared but the Calling Card Did Not Unlock

This is the most common problem with the Easter egg.

Mr. Peeks can appear after a successful loot run, but the Bullseye Calling Card requires you to beat the previous champion’s score.

If you received loot but no Calling Card, you probably:

  • Hit only 10 targets.
  • Took too long during the moving section.
  • Missed enough throws to let the sequence expire.
  • Completed the loot threshold without beating the champion score.
  • Encountered a temporary challenge-tracking issue.

Because the Easter egg only runs once per match, start a new game and attempt an 11-target run.

What to Do if the Targets Do Not Appear

Check these common causes:

  • You did not interact with the trophy first.
  • You picked up a different Combat Axe instead of the spawned one.
  • You are searching near the wrong Blackwater Lake fence.
  • Another player already activated the challenge.
  • Someone already completed or failed the once-per-match sequence.
  • The game has not registered the trophy interaction.

Return to the trophy and confirm that it glows. Then collect the axe beside the work shed and move toward the road near the Power Pump.

If the sequence still does not begin, restart the match rather than spending later rounds searching for targets in unrelated map areas.

Players completing Zombies weapon challenges can compare the available Infestation mastery camo route after finishing the side Easter egg.

The available pre-progressed BO7 account options provide a separate starting route for players who do not want to repeat the early account grind.

Cosmetic collectors can also review the current BO7 Yeti Bundle details after leaving the Zombies match.

The Axe Throwing Easter Egg does not affect the campaign or Endgame. Players switching modes can use the existing campaign-connected Endgame access steps.

The current Black Ops 7 Zombies and progression options bring the supported modes, challenges, camos, accounts, and related services together.

Final Thoughts

The Axe Throwing Easter Egg is quick once you know the correct location. Activate the trophy inside the Blackwater Lake work shed, collect the Combat Axe outside, and hit the floating purple targets near the roadside fence.

Keep throwing until Mr. Peeks appears. For the Bullseye Calling Card, aim for a fast 11-target run rather than stopping as soon as the random loot drops.

BO7 Axe Throwing Easter Egg FAQs

How do you start the Mr. Peeks axe challenge?

Interact with the small trophy on a shelf inside the Blackwater Lake work shed. Then collect the Combat Axe that appears in the stump or log outside.

How many axe targets do you need to hit?

Hit enough targets to summon Mr. Peeks and receive loot. For the Bullseye Calling Card, current player testing indicates that you should hit 11 targets and beat the champion score of 10.

Why did Mr. Peeks appear without giving me the Bullseye Calling Card?

You may have reached the loot threshold without beating the champion score. Complete a new run and hit 11 targets quickly before the sequence ends.

No. The Easter egg can only be completed once per match and by one player. Other squad members must wait until a new game to attempt it.

What rewards does the axe challenge give?

Mr. Peeks can drop Essence, Salvage, weapons, Perks, equipment, Scorestreaks, Aether Tools, or Aetherium Crystals. Beating the champion score can also unlock the Bullseye Calling Card.

No. The axe challenge is a separate side Easter egg. You do not need the Necrofluid Gauntlet, Main Quest progress, or a completed boss fight.
