Black Ops 2 Port Patches: What’s Fixed, And What’s Still Broken

The Black Ops 2 PS4 port launch brought classic multiplayer back, but some bugs are still causing headaches. Here is what update 1.04 actually fixed.

The Black Ops 2 PS4 port launch finally put the fan-favourite shooter back for PlayStation players after more than a decade stuck on last-gen hardware.

The recent Black Ops 2 port patches have mostly focused on stability and controller feel rather than new content. That’s understandable since Treyarch and Iron Galaxy built this as a straight port, not a remaster.

Here’s what’s actually changed, what’s still broken, and what you’re paying for.

A Rocky Launch for a Classic Game

The original Black Ops and its sequel both landed on PS4 and PS5 on July 9, 2026. Neither game got a visual overhaul and is still running with the same 2012-era assets.

Both games are just running on hardware that won’t overheat mid-match. That decision kept the price down, but it also meant early bugs carried over untouched, plus a few new ones introduced by the port itself.

What Changed in the Latest BO2 Patch (Update 1.04)

The recent BO2 PS5 patch updates landed July 17. The patch is tagged as version 1.04 on PS5 and 1.004 on PS4. According to the developers, the update covers three areas:

  • Public multiplayer matches now prioritise PS5 hosts instead of falling back to PS4 hosts mid-match.
  • Additional protections against host migration exploits and drops.
  • Controller deadzone behaviour adjusted to match the original PS3 release more closely.

It’s a welcome update if the input feel was bothering you, but it’s not a fix-everything patch. A handful of persistent issues like those affecting XP progression were only partially addressed in an earlier update and are still being worked on.

For players who’d rather skip the grind entirely, COD BO2 Modded Accounts can get you set up with unlocked gear from the jump.

The BO2 Party Matchmaking Bug Is Still Unresolved

This is the one players are angriest about. The BO2 party matchmaking bug causes friends who queue together to get split onto opposing teams. Players can also be dropped from each other’s lobby entirely between matches.

The July 17 patch notes never mentioned it, but reports on social media suggest it’s still happening after the update.

Until an official fix is released, the most reliable workaround involves:

  • Having one party member start the search alone.
  • Having the rest of the group join that lobby individually right as it loads, instead of queuing together.

It’s a clunky workaround that helps players avoid most of the matchmaking drops.

Black Ops 2 Input Lag Fix: Deadzone and Display Settings

Complaints about floaty aim were common at launch. The Black Ops 2 input lag fix that most players landed on before the official patch was a manual one:

  • Lower your controller’s stick deadzone in the PS4/PS5 system settings.
  • Set your TV or monitor to Game Mode.
  • Run the game at 1080p rather than any upscaled output.

Update 1.04 now handles part of this automatically by realigning deadzone behaviour with the PS3 original. Players still noticing drift should double-check their own display and controller settings on top of the patch.

Crossplay and Matchmaking Pools

Black Ops 2 on PS4 and PS5 share the same matchmaking pool. PS4 and PS5 owners will land in the same lobbies together. Matchmaking is also split by DLC ownership.

Base game owners and Season Pass owners can still match together. Map packs only appear in rotation for players who own them.

There’s also no crossplay with Xbox, PC, or the old PS3 servers. There’s also no cross-progression. Prestige ranks earned on PS3 don’t carry over to the new ports.

Skipping the Grind

Not everyone wants to climb the Pick-10 unlock ladder from scratch. If you’d rather jump straight into high-tier loadouts, Call of Duty BO2 All Service Unlocks can get you there without the weapon-levelling detour.

Setting up BO2 Bot Lobbies is also worth considering if you want to practice attachments and camos in a low-pressure private match instead.

Final Thoughts

The Black Ops 2 port patches released so far have improved host stability and controller feel. The party matchmaking bug remains the biggest complaint from returning players.

FAQs

Is Zombies mode included in the port?

Yes. Both Black Ops and Black Ops 2 ship with their full Zombies experience at launch, not as a separate purchase.

Can you play split-screen?

Only 2-player local split-screen, online or offline. The 4-player local split-screen from the original PS3/Xbox 360 versions didn’t make it into this port.

Is there an FOV slider?

No. Field of view is locked at 80, and there’s currently no way to adjust it

Does it run at 120 FPS on PS5 Pro?

No. Both games are capped at 60 FPS regardless of hardware, so a PS5 Pro won’t unlock a higher frame rate.

Are Wager Matches and Studio Mode still in the game?

No. Both were cut from this port, along with a few smaller extras like live player-count displays.
